  • Teaching form Unity (for yoga teachers)

Teaching form Unity (for yoga teachers)

Our commonsense understanding of the words “yoga” and “meditation” suggest that they are two separate things: One of the body and one of the mind. But as we go deeper into the practice either one, we find a deeper unity at their core.

A weekend workshop with special sessions for  yoga teachers. You will need to attend the whole weekend workshop “Asana as meditation – Meditaiton as asana”  in order to join the extra sessions for teachers. This is to ensure that you have an embodied understanding of the techniques we will be working with in the last session on sunday.

Saturday 9.00-9.40: Welcome and introductions (open to yoga teachers). What will be todays main teaching techniques? How to listen when you are a teacher/student attending a workshop.

Saturday 10.00-13.00: Asana as Meditation (open to all)
A dynamic yoga class exploring sensitive movement as  meditation in action.

Saturday 14.30-17.30: Meditation as Asana (open to all)
Alternations between seated meditation periods and supine yoga posture flows releasing tension.

Saturday 9.00-9.40: Being breathed (open to yoga teachers)

A few words abut todays main teaching technique (svaramukta). Q&A from yesterdays workshop from a teaching perspective.

Sunday 10.00-13.00: Breathing into stilness (open to all)
A dynamic, sensitive yoga posture flow releasing the free rythm of the breath (svaramukta). The class makes a seamless transiton to a seated meditation practice towards the end.

Sunday 14.00-17.00: Teaching skills (open to yoga teachers) Inspirational workshop on how to teach asana as meditation. Alternating between dialogue and little practical explorations we break down the progressive instructions used in the previous workshop. Birgitte will guide collective explorations of two simple techniques to play with in your own practice and share with your students.

Open to trained and trainee yoga teachers from all branches of the yoga family tree.

  • Making friends with “monkey mind”

    Making friends with “monkey mind”

“Monkey mind” is the part of you that fills your head with chatter and throws peanuts in your face when you are trying to “do yoga” or sit in meditation. Monkey mind is playing up when we find ourself lying awake in bed, when we put the toothpaste in the refrigerator or when we spend an entire yoga class thinking about…whatever! This workshop will help you make friends with your monkey mind, getting the benefit of its power, strength and speed rather than trying to tie it down. We begin with a facilitated dialogue with the part of our mind that is wild and unruly and sometimes disturbs us in our daily life. From there we slide on to the yoga mat for a softly flowing posture practice, relaxation and seated meditation.

The workshop is open to anyone, especially if you sometimes feel disturbed by your thinking mind.

    Time: 9.30-13.00

    Price: 399 kr

  • Happy Everyday Life

    Happy Everyday Life

Packing for the annual meditation retreat with my teacher i have to admit:Its not an awe-inspiring accomplishment to leave work and family for 10 days of silent stillness in the beautiful mountains of Tuscany. It’s pure indulgence. Candy for the mind, love for the soul. What is awe-inspiring is my mother and husband who will be babysitting the kids while I am away!

Yoga is so much more than welness, relaxation and having a nice experience. Sure, if your life is full of wellness, enjoy it to the max. No problem! There is nothing particularily spiritual about suffering.

What I’m getting at is that our practice is so much more than sealed off time-zone where we enjoy a moment of peace before going back to work. Yoga is not separate from obligations, choices and relationships. It’s not another object of longing.

When the holidays are over, when everyday life returns, when things get harder we have a chance to practice being with that.  And right there lies the possibility for deepening our practice.

The hard part is not going up the mountains carrying a DO NOT DISTURB sign. It’s coming back down and opening the door.

To celebrate this, the next couple of workshops will support you in making yoga and meditation an embodied practice non-separate from action and everyday life. A thing we do to embrace what we are right here, right now. You can see the full program and dates here.

I wish you a happy everyday life!

    Birgitte

  • Movement and Meditation course

    Movement and Meditation course

From January to June we will dive deeper into Dynamic Yoga and meditation to explore their inherent unity. We will approach meditation somatically as a physical practice and explore dynamic movement as an invitation to uncover the meditative mind within your everyday activity.

Birgitte will be give you guidance in the first half of the course so you can gradually establish a seated meditation practice on your own over the spring.  During the course, new elements will be introduced for you to include in your seated morning practice.

From 8.30 we move from seated to dynamic meditation. Birgitte will guide a simple and accessible flow of yoga postures, which invites awareness to ground in the body as it mobilizes and strengthens the body softly.  Each class ends in relaxation.

  • This is it!

    This is it!

“Whatever is happening is the path to enlightenment” (Pema Chodron)

I was in my early teens when I started to hang enormous quartz crystals around my neck and go overboard into new age spirituality. By the time I turned 20 I had divinities hanging on my wall like rock stars and my house was so saturated with incense smoke that my friends said it was beginning to smell like bacon.

I was in massive pain. My body was a mess, my hair was falling off, I was in and out of the hospital with cronic eczema and my love life was falling apart. I dealt with it by shaving my head, wrapping a white shawl around myself and reciting mantras faster than a whole monastery of monks on double espresso.

I found my first real teacher at the age 20 in a shamanistic tipi camp. I have no idea how a reincarnated Tibetan lama found his way out in the forest with us new age-types. I heard that years ago he had resigned from the exile government in India and with permission turned away from  monastic life. When he landed in Europe he spent his last money on a pair of jeans and got a job washing dishes in a restaurant. Back in the monastery he had never done a single day of manual labor. He would give Buddhist teachings in the basement of his house, and in the summer he would lead retreats from a primitive tipi in the forest.

“Tell me how to meditate,” I begged. He laughed, picked up a chain saw, handed me the axe and said: “Lets cut some wood first”. I heard from the others that he was a powerful clairvoyant but when I asked him about my future, he would kindly ask me to help him in the garden. When I wanted to learn how to recite the heart sutra in Sanskrit, he asked if I could do the cooking for his next retreat. I spent most of my free time washing up tea cups in his basement, cooking vegetarian food in the forest and laughing at lame Tibetan jokes over butter tea. When we eventually had some quiet time I would never miss the opportunity to ask him for advice. He would listen for a while and then fall asleep; chin dropped right onto his chest.

But I was in deep pain and my life made no sense. It just hurt! Never the less I was deeply convinced that I had come to this planet to learn something. That there had to be a spiritual path out there meant for me to walk. This horrible suffering must have been given to me for a reason. What was my dharma? What was the mission? I had no clue. I wanted to get over these annoying obstacles to my path. I was sure that my suffering was just “burning off bad karma” so that later, I could rise up and save the world. I wanted to find my path NOW, no time to spare. So i decided to become a Buddhist.

All my teacher did was give me a simple meditation practice to do each day. But I wanted him to teach me Sanskrit! I got impatient and began to read books about Buddhism on my own. I really thought I got wiser those years. I worked out all by myself that I had way too many attachments, that my ego was too big, that I needed to develop more loving kindness, that I had to find my Buddha nature, that my enemies had Buddha nature too and I needed to learn how to love them without compromise.

His sweet response to my newfound spiritual identity was to talk to me about living from “the middle way”. Finally I thought. A path! Cool, I totally get it! Just stay in the middle, do not go overboard. Lead a balanced life!

The middle way for me, however, turned out to be an endless array of personal failures. A narrow and dangerous path that I would fall off at any minute. I was either too disciplined not disciplined enough, I loved too naively or I failed to muster real and deep compassion, I was too self-centered or too boundary less. Getting your spiritual shit together in perfect balance seemed almost impossible!

My lama friend smiled at me, poured me another cup of tea and asked: How are the kids?

We remained friends for years. I slowly grew hair, stopped being a buddhist and took up yoga. He didn’t mind. Once I became a yoga teacher I began to silently criticize him. He didn’t mind. I however, was visibly disappointed when I saw him fall asleep in seated meditation one day. And why was he spending more time working on his house than sitting on his cushion? And was it really ok that he was drinking beer and eating meat? Is that really the behavior of a reincarnated spiritual leader? My visits became rare as I took my striving to new heights bending myself backwards on the yoga mat.

It been 20 years since then. I am not afraid to admint that i´ve spent quite a few of them banging my head against the wall of spiritual accomplishment. But along the way I did have the good fortune to meet a brilliant yoga teacher. I came to him wanting to learn handstands, he told me to go into childs pose. I wanted to heal my asthma with pranayama, he told me to let go of manipulating my breath. I wanted to understand yoga philosophy, he told me to feel sensation.

It all felt annoyingly familiar. So this time i gave it a try.

I may never be able to grasp the full implication of what these two teachers really have done for me. But I can tell that the first laid out the tracks and the second gave me more than one push. I´m not sure what, but something is moving.

Looking back to that first meeting with my Lama I think I understand what he was trying to show me when handing me an axe instead of a sutra. His simple message was not unlike the one my yoga teacher spelled out to me years later:

    This is it!

Can’t find your path? Have a look in the mirror. You already are the path. Don’t know your life’s true purpose? Not sure what is to be your sacred duty on the planet? It’s a no brainer: This very life is your dharma. Your the next step will be nothing but your path. This is it!

    Mission accomplished.

Being a totally messed up 20 year old with no life, no hair and an axe in my hand was the mission. Being in pain and being sick of it was the mission. Wanting to get over it, learn Sanskrit, meditate or do wild backbends was an expression of my inability accept that mission. But even that resistance was also the mission. Feeling the pain I was in was simply too much for me at the time, so I had to wrap it in white shawls, paint it over with spoiritual symbols, sing mantras, read sutras, believe in concepts and do postures. But no matter how I tried to bend my body, control my mind and train my tounge the pain was still there. And the pain was an invitation to enquire more deeply. To drop the “im ok with it” mantra, to let go of being a spiritual hero, to strip down to the bare facts, to risk the vulnerability of admitting that I have no idea why all this shit was happening to me. My body and my life falling apart was not an expression of me being stuck in some “lower” state of consciousness. My illness was not burning off “bad karma” so I could one day rise up to a more elevated and totally painless mode of existence. Imagining a divine light at the end of the tunnel was preventing me from realizing this was it.

Looking back I think my lama had fully realized this when he got his bum off the golden cushion, put on those jeans and started washing dishes. No wonder I saw him spending more time in his garden than in meditation. I bet it’s all the same to him.

I´m not sure I really get it yet. I´m not sure I really “got” anything out of those 20 years of spiritual practice. Really. There may be nothing to get.

But I do recognize that my view on a “spiritual calling” has changed. I’m no longer desperately looking for a steep and narrow path to enlightenment. I no longer want to get over it and go to a better place. My dharma seems to me today to be just what I am already busy doing. My spiritual duty is to fully face the life I have on my plate here and now. Not just when it feels great, but also when it hurts like hell. No reservations. Just feeling it as intimately as I’m capable of in the moment and responding from there.

It makes no difference whether I think I am an arrogant, selfish, demanding, useless, deluded idiot or whether I think, I am an enlightened being on a mission to save the planet. It does not make any difference whether I chant mantras or make money, whether I embrace or resist, whether i laugh, love, cry or sigh. This is still it! I will be doing exactly what I am doing because there is nowhere else to be but in this very moment In this very body.

I may be wrong. But i´s like to suggest that the middle way is no narrow path to tread with neurotic precision to get to a pot of gold at the end. The middle way is probably the broadest most inclusive experience we humans will ever get our heads around. It’s not a balance act, it’s embracing the full spectrum of everything that we are. Deluded and divine, bad and brilliant. Nothing left out, nothing disowned. Cutting wood, cooking food, having babies, being furious, loving like crazy, being bored or getting a depression is no less spiritual than reciting the heart sutra in Sanskrit. Some of it hurts more than others it’s still your sacred path.

Living from the middle way means you can’t possibly go astray. There is no outside to go to, there is no heavenly hierarchy to fall from, there is no test to pass. You did not come here to learn, you came here to give.

  • Weekend workshop: Asana as Bandha (Hornbæk)

Weekend workshop: Asana as Bandha (Hornbæk)

This workshop is in Danish, but may shift to English if needed. Focus is on establishing the bandhas as an integrated part of any yoga posture. The bandhas are essential in yoga posture practice, not only because they protect the joints and stabilize the core of the body. Practicing asana as bandha is an invitation cross the threshold from mere posturing and enter into the subtle depths of yoga. Rather than giving you knowledge about the physical, psychological and energetic effects of the bandhas this workshop will give you the tools to explore them in practice and experience firsthand their energetic and subtle effects. The aim of the workshop is to explore how the bandhas are not just about tension and stability but also about deep release and integration.

    to enquire more, write info@dynamicyoga.dk

The content of each workshop is valuable to all students, practitioners and teachers from all yoga styles. Each workshops may be attended individually or as an intensive.

    Program:

    Friday, February 3rd 1 17.00-20.00:
    Becoming softer

This evening class extends  a deep invitation to relax, feel and connect while moving through a gentle yet powerful sequence of postures. The workshop provides a deeply nourishing context in which students can explore the natural rhythms of the body and develop a deeper trust in its wisdom. The workshop includes 2hrs of posture practice, a 30min relaxation and seated meditation and may conclude with open dialogue

    Saturday, February 4th 9.00-13.00:
    Organic Principles
Progress in yoga is a matter of developing and refining our capacity to listen and respond effectively and consistently. When posture practice becomes challenging it is imperative that we have at our disposal a knowledge of the organic principles that prevent us from falling into an aggressive desire driven yoga practice and instead support a compassionate and intimate connection with the inner intelligence of the body. This morning session includes a 2hr 30min full, balanced and energizing posture practice, a 30-minute relaxation and seated meditation and may conclude with open dialogue.

    Saturday, February 4th 15.00-18.00
    Freeing the breath

In this workshop you will be guided in an intricate vinyasa krama (step by step), which invites a deep release into natural organic breathing. The chosen posture practice will include soft vinyasa and a gentle opening and nourishing context in which you can explore your individual respiratory capacity, ways you can support that and recognise habitual patterns and there underlying tensions. The session includes 2hrs of posture practice, a 30min relaxation and seated meditation and may conclude with open dialogue.

  • Yoga Foundations 1: Activating the hands and arms

Yoga Foundations 1: Activating the hands and arms

This is the first out of three workshops introducing the 7 universal actions supporting yoga posture practice. The morning session will introduce the basic principles for activating the hands and arms. The class is based on a specially sequenced vinyasa training series (vinyasukshmasya) which strengthens and awakens the upper body, mobilizes the shoulder joints while integrating and sensitizing the body as a whole. Awakening the muscles in the hands and arms will not only support the wrists, elbows, shoulders and neck but also affects the breath and the entire spine. The class sets the foundation for yoga postures where the hands are on the floor but also supports the spine and torso a broad range of other yoga postures. The class ends in deep relaxation and seated meditation.

The afternoon sesssion will clarify the principles behind the morning session through guided explorations on your mat. The day ends in a gentle flow of yoga postures which mobilize and relax the upper torso and neck while releasing the natural rythms of the breath.

After the workshop you will recieve an image file with the vinyasukshmasya series to help you continue your practice at home .

This workshop trilogy runs over three saturdays and is open to all. Beginners will recieve a solid and safe foundation for starting yoga posture practice. Experienced studetnts and yoga teachers will increase their sensitivity and gain a deeper understanding of how the seemingly separable parts of the body work together as a whole. Each workshop is based on a corresponding vinyasa training series which allows you safely practice on your own.

Prices: 500 DKR for each workshop day (cheaper if you book all three workshops with a Yogacentralen Punchcard)

Yoga Foundations 2: Activating the feet and legs

This workshop is the second out of three introducing the 7 universal actions supporting yoga posture practice (asana). The morning class will teach the basic principles for activating the feet and legs. The class is based on a special vinyasa training series (vinyasachandrasya). The practice strengthens all the motor muscles and mobilises all the motor joints while developing and quietening respiration. It is a dynamic but deeply nourishing practice that recalibrates the sensory motor pathways especially in the feet, legs and pelvis. This will help you protect vulnrable joints like those of the knee and lower back and set the foundation for all standing postures. The morning session ends in deep relaxation and seated meditation.
The afternoon session will clarify the principles behind the mornings class through a series of guided explorations on your mat. The day ends in a gentle flowing class which opens the hips and stabilizes the pelvis.

After the workshop you will recieve an image file with the vinyasachandrasya series, to support you in practicing it on your own.

  • Bandha: the unity of the body

Bandha: the unity of the body

The bandhas are among the most powerful techniues in yoga. As a consequence, they are often surrounded with hype and mysticism. Really, they are neither difficult or mystical, just simple muscular actions with some rather remarkable effects. Adding to their subtle energetic aspects the bandhas are also an invitation to practice yoga with integrety, without pain or injury. The bandhas, when accessed from muscular acion reveal the indivisible wholeness of the body and is an indespensible part of  a safe, eficient and nourishing yoga practice. This workshop will introduce simple phsyical actions by which you can acess the bandhas by the breath and in yoga posture practice. By learning how to do this sensitivly, you are invited to acces their healing, integrating power.

This workshop will focus on accessing and awakening core sexual energy as a source of nourishment and rejuvenation for body and mind, and as an invitation to the subtle experience of sarvasukham (full body orgasm).

PARTICIPANTS will practice fully clothed alone on their own mats – there may be partner exercises involving light touch, i.e. hand on lower belly. Please bring a light blindfold (scarf or similar), this will be used to invite a deepening into what is to be felt.
