    Embrace meditation (course in copenhagen)

Learn the basics of seated meditation. You can use the course as a support for beginning, rebooting or deepening your seated practice at home, or you can simply enjoy the classes as a weekly evening relaxation treat. Birgitte will invite you to embrace meditation as a practice of embodied self-inquiry. You will learn a performance-free approach to meditation that invites you to embody the state you are in and be at peace there. You will get support from a dedicated teacher to:

-Find a comfortable meditation posture that works for you.

-Learn basic techniques that invite your mind to relax into meditation rather than using effort to get there.

-Clarify questions that come up in your practice as it deepens.

-Learn about meditation as a natural baseline for the mind rather than a cultivated skill.

The classes will alternate between guided meditation practices and gentle mindful movement that release unnecessary tension before the next round of sitting. Each class makes room for clarification and dialogue underway, so you can adjust and deepen your practice week after week.

Birgitte is a psychologist, yoga and meditation teacher and brings more than 25 years of seated meditation practice to her work.

  • 50 hour yoga teacher training: The role of the yoga teacher (Copenhagen)

50 hour yoga teacher training: The role of the yoga teacher (Copenhagen)

Life as a yoga teacher is a welcome to paradox: Our glowing passion for yoga can burn us out, our connection with students can leave us feeling lonely and isolated, our spiritual call to unity takes place within a highly divided and competitive market space and our skills in empowering our students can become a power-trip in itself.

This 50-hour course is for the trained yoga teacher who want to inquire deeper into psychological and social dynamics around their work. We will explore the psychology behind your role as a yoga teacher as well as the power dynamics entailed in taking on this role. Our focus is the teacher/student relationship and how it plays out in your own relationship to the people you teach and train with. A typical day involves:

    1) A talk addressing psychological and historical aspects affecting modern yoga communities

    2) A group enquiry using the Big Mind process to access the drives, resources and shadows that can support you in becoming more helpful to your students

    3) Short yoga posture practices, meditations or group exercises integrating, digesting and operationalizing what we learned during the day.

The training gives you tools to navigate with integrity from your own inner compass rather than receiving an expert guideline for how you should act as a teacher. The training is mainly process-work meaning we will be working with your lived experience with taking on the role of the yoga teacher and discuss the dynamics that you are currently puzzled by or need support to navigate. Our group enquiry will address the following themes:

-The teacher/student relationship as it plays out in your life

    -Healthy boundaries at work

-Power, hierarchy and cult-logic: The psychology of shadows in yoga

-Your own shadows and what they can teach you

-Navigating competition and the spiritual marketplace.

    -Group dynamics in your teaching.

-Loneliness, working life and creating networks of peer support.

This training is limited to 10 people.

    Dates 2018: July 21 at 15.00 to July 28. At 15.00.

  • Åbent Flow: Fascia i bevægelse (Silkeborg)

Åbent Flow: Fascia i bevægelse (Silkeborg)

  • Yogafilosofi i praksis -En Big Mind process (Silkeborg)

Yogafilosofi i praksis -En Big Mind process (Silkeborg)

Yoga Embodied: Retreat in Portugal (in English)

Join us for a week in the beautiful mountains of Portugal. Birgitte will teach a yoga retreat supporting a somatic self-inquiry on your mat with slow, deep posture flows, sensitive and natural breath release and sweet bedtime meditations.

Morning classes begin with a seated pranayama practice and transitions into a soft vinyasa flow teaching balanced muscular activity to support your joints while strengthening and mobilizing the whole of your body. Afternoons offer a more quiet and meditative flow releasing connective tissue and nervous system.
Two evenings we will play with the Big Mind process inviting you to collectively reflect and work with what comes up in your practice during the retreat. Big Mind was developed by Zen Master Genpo Roshi and takes place as a dialogue between the facilitator and the group. The Big Mind work allows you to tap into the wisdom within by giving voice to undiscovered aspects of the self.

  • A reflection on the yoga and body image debate

A reflection on the yoga and body image debate

World famous yoga teacher Katy Budig´s status as  “the face of body positivity” has been questioned by people from the Yoga and Body Image Coalition (YBIC).  Is Miss Budig not a little to white and too fit to speak for all those bodies excluded by the Yoga Journal ideal? A member of the YBIC asked: Where are larger bodies? Where are people of colour?” A set of very interesting blog posts followed. Below is my humble reflection on how this debate is unfolding originally posted as a comment to Melanie Klein (co founder of YBCI). But more importantly, take a moment to read the statements of both Budig and Klein as this debate is both important and informative.

Read Kathryn Budig´s post ” Color the World” here
Read Melanie Kleins razor sharp response here

    Response to Melanie Klein

Thank you for a very interesting and sober turn in this debate. I like the invitation you extend to Miss Budig and see your efforts in taking this debate to a more constructive place. I would also like to hear your reflections on how your own privilege of academic training plays a role in the power dynamic of this particular conversation.

As an academic, I couldn’t agree more with your reflections and welcome your analysis. However, I am not blind to the fact that my preference for your writing over Budig´s is shaped by the fact that I share your privilege: academic training. As an ex-academic now full time yoga teacher I share your feeling of wanting to “educate people on some key points, and help raise consciousness“. However, it has also become painfully clear to me that my privilege and the desires it installs in me has its own power dynamic and subtle mechanisms of oppression. That academic authority is a razor sharp, double-edged sword to be handled with great care.

You quote other responses to Budig´s work and emphasis that people have been “honoring her vulnerability for sharing her story.” and then continue:

”But (yes, there’s a but…), there’s more to examine. And that’s where people, including myself, have often felt disappointed by your statements. Often, your shares feel incomplete, they’re powerful stories lacking a deeper analysis.”

On the one hand i share your frustration. On the other hand i see a mirroring of the use of privelege in the way you adress Budig here. The very ability to do a deeper analysis of contemporary yoga, the litteracy to power structures and systematic oppression is your privilege, not hers. You had training, you had 20 years of working in this field, she didn´t. The power of academic authority is a trump card. It gives voice and this voice can (and should) be used politically in a conscious way. And I see you do that, and it’s great.

But (yes there is a but) you also write: “it’s difficult to even acknowledge our privilege because it’s taken for granted”. How does your own position as an academic constitute a privilege here? And is that privilege not taken for granted in this debate? As academics, we do see things structurally and systematically, but does that give us the right to be “disappointed” when we read statements from people who have not had the training, resources, desires and structural conditions to do what we do? I´m not so sure.

I have no doubt that your response to Budig expresses a genuine concern and a real desire to generate “a sense of community and promoting healing and understanding”. But I do have doubts as to whether that message is going to be heard when it is backed up by the power/knowledge nexus which to me is the privilege that beats all other privileges. It beats all other privileges because academic authority comes with the illusion of neutrality. The illusion that “anyone can do this”, anyone can go and educate themselves. But in reality there are lots of structural, political, economical and social factors who has to be in place for that to happen. The literacy and sensitivity to power you acquired though academic training is not available to everyone. I see your passion for sharing it, but I also wonder if there could be a more constructive way to go about that.

Building a real sense of community seems unlikely when the invitation to miss Budig to join your party rests on the premise that she first accepts to be “educated” and “elevated” by the very people she feels perpetrated by. Her feelings can be brilliantly analyzed as not wanting to be called on her priveleges, as her exercising power by slipping into the victim position and evading responsibility. But will that brilliant analysis of yours generate healing, understanding and a sense of community? My guess is no. It’s educative but not healing. Your mission to educate and elevate consciousness presumes that you are already on top and your partner in dialogue will have to accept a position at the bottom and in addition agree to need your help in rising up to your (privileged) level of consciousness. You invite miss B to enter into a dialogue and collaboration but on the premise that she first accepts that she has to become more like you. I doubt miss B will step up to that level of vulnerability. If she does that would be a true act of courage and wonder-woman strength. We can only hope. It would be nothing short of a miracle.

For this conversation to produce the healing, understanding and community I see you aiming for, maybe we all need to be ready to be called on our privileges without slipping into the position of victim or the rescuer (both positions tend to just generate more perpetration). I have no solution to this problem. I have no idea if this is even a problem worth thinking about. I am just sharing a concern. And again I celebrate the fact that you make the inquiry to always reflect on what we are busy doing in the yoga community. Rock on!

  • Happy Everyday Life

    Happy Everyday Life

Packing for the annual meditation retreat with my teacher i have to admit:Its not an awe-inspiring accomplishment to leave work and family for 10 days of silent stillness in the beautiful mountains of Tuscany. It’s pure indulgence. Candy for the mind, love for the soul. What is awe-inspiring is my mother and husband who will be babysitting the kids while I am away!

Yoga is so much more than welness, relaxation and having a nice experience. Sure, if your life is full of wellness, enjoy it to the max. No problem! There is nothing particularily spiritual about suffering.

What I’m getting at is that our practice is so much more than sealed off time-zone where we enjoy a moment of peace before going back to work. Yoga is not separate from obligations, choices and relationships. It’s not another object of longing.

When the holidays are over, when everyday life returns, when things get harder we have a chance to practice being with that.  And right there lies the possibility for deepening and realizing, for walking our talk.

The hard part is not going up the mountains carrying a DO NOT DISTURB sign. It’s coming back down and opening the door.

To celebrate this, the next couple of workshops will support you in making yoga and meditation an embodied practice non-separate from action and everyday life. A thing we do to embrace what we are right here, right now. You can see the full program and dates here.

I wish you a happy everyday life!

    Birgitte

To become certified in this 200hour training you will need to complete all four immersions, plus a 3 week residential ‘Teaching Skills’ intensive with Godfrey Devereux and Olivia Crooks. This is held each September in France at Windfire Yoga. Any trained teacher with a 200 hour certificate from another school of yoga, can add these hours to this 200hour training to make 500hours.

For registration, please write Heidi Lykholt at: til@heidilykholt.dk

    The four modules are:

PART ONE: NOURISHING THE BODY (May 9-12th 2013)

Learn about the nourishing power of yoga posture practice, upon which all its other possible benefits depend. You will learn a complete practice series designed to invite deep nourishment to body and mind, and some potent pranayama practices for deep release and rejuvenation. The Vinyasasuptasya Practice Series includes inversions, supine and prone poses, backbends, extensions and rotations. You will learn how to access the inherent integrity of the body by way of the Dynamics of Integrity, so that your practice will always be as nourishing as it can be invigorating and transformative.

PART TWO: AWAKENING THE BODY (d. 25-28. okt 2013)

This immersion invites you to awaken the latent intelligence of the body. You will learn a complete practice series designed to awaken all the muscles of the body. The Vinyasxandrasya Practice Series systematically sensitizes and awakens the whole body while awakening the mind to the power and wisdom of somatic intelligence. You will learn how to access the inherent intelligence of the body by way of the Seven Universal Actions of yoga posture practice, so that your practice can deepen safely and effectively.
PART THREE: INTEGRATING THE BODY (d. 21-24. nov 2013)

This immersion intensive will explore the integrating power of the spiral dynamic of integrity. This allows the Seven Universal Actions of yoga posture practice to be integrated throughout the whole body via the relationship between the ribcage and the pelvis into the release of the breath. The spiral dynamics of the arms, feet and legs will be explored by way of the interconnected nature of the relationships between the body parts in a variety of standing postures, lunges, backbends and suryanamaskar.
PART FOUR: STRENGTHENING THE BODY (Feb.28 – march 3rd  2014)

The final immersion will explore the flexibility and power of the human spine, as the core of yoga posture practice. Extensions, rotations, forward bends and backbends will be presented and explored in sequences that can access, release, strengthen and integrate the spine into the whole body as the source of its power and the medium of its intelligence. The short sequences (meruvinyasa, dandavinyasa, vritavinyasa, and xakravinyasa), which can be combined, can be used to develop genuine core strength while also strengthening and integrating the muscles of the pelvic floor, abdomen, back, spine and ribcage and developing a healthy spinal flexibility.

    About Dynamic Yoga Teacher Training

This teacher training is based on practice as yoga is a practice and not an academic subject. Contrary to a university degree, yoga cannot be learned by reading and listening. Teaching yoga is a craft in which the body is the most important vehicle. To be a good teacher you need to efficiently transmit your own experience on the mat on the basis of what you can feel and realize on your own without having to parrot a teacher or a book. This is why the first half of the teacher training is focused on your own practice and your ability to feel and adapt based on the shifting capacity of your body as it goes deeper. You will receive a thorough introduction to asana, pranayama and meditation.

Each module comes with its own set of teaching materials. You will receive text, sound and image files to deepen your practice at home between modules. The four immersions form the first half of the internationally certified 200-hour Dynamic yoga Teacher Training. The training is concluded with a three week teaching skills intensive at Windfire School of Yoga running in France every year ion September. The first four immersions are taught by Dynamic Yoga Trainer Olivia Crooks and the afternoon explorations are guided by Dynamic Yoga Senior Teacher Birgitte Gorm Hansen. Det teaching skills intensive in France is taught by Godfrey Devereux og Olivia Crooks.  Godfrey Devereux has taught yoga since the 1980´ies and has trained hundreds of yoga teachers all over the world. He published 7 books on yoga and philosophy and is one of the most respected teachers in Europe.

On Godfrey Devereux and the teaching skills intensive in France:

Training in Dynamic Yoga with Godfrey Devereux is a rare and invaluable experience. Not only because Godfrey is one of the world’s most experienced Yoga Teacher Trainers, but also because the breadth and depth of his experience has allowed him to develop the most powerful and complete teaching methodology available: The Dynamic Yoga Training Method. This profound and precise methodology is based directly on the intelligence of the human bodimind and represents a genuine renaissance of yoga posture praxis as a spiritual praxis capable of satisfying the deepest human longing.  Taking place in two parts, Embodiment (the Immersion Modules) and Application (Teaching Skills) our training will provide you with the understanding and tools to teach yoga postures to benefit body, mind and spirit safely and satisfyingly, while allowing you to adapt your new skills to your previous experience to become the teacher you  have always wanted to be.

The  Immersion Modules, led by Senior Trainer Olivia Crooks, take you deep into the intelligence of body, mind and consciousness in a  gradual, progressive process of deep internalisation and integration. You will undertake a systematic exploration of  over 150 postural, breath and awareness techniques practiced, presented and explored in dynamically linked groups that clarify and amplify their functional, structural and energetic relationships. These techniques mobilise and recalibrate the whole bodimind and provide the indispensable, practical basis for the integration of intelligence upon which the deep fruits of yoga depend.

The Teaching Skills Course led by both Godfrey and Olivia provides a deep and thorough training in the art of teaching yoga dynamically. You will learn how to use the mobile nature of the body to prepare your students for the sustained and genuine stillness upon which yoga depends. You will be shown how to progressively recalibrate the neuromuscular habits of your students’ bodies so that they become habituated to acting with integrity, while releasing tension and developing deep structural and functional strength. You will also be shown how to simultaneously use this neuromuscular process to release the mind from distorted and destructive habits within the context of yoga posture praxis. This will take place within a detailed exploration of the art of progressive instruction (Vinyasakrama), which allows your students to transform body and mind safely, gradually and effortlessly.
While being deeply informative, as well as profoundly transformational, our courses are not based on the accumulation of information, but on action and experience. You will be invited to a deep and informative intimacy with the human body, mind and consciousness, by way of your own direct experience.

  • Weekend workshop: Asana as Bandha (Hornbæk)

Weekend workshop: Asana as Bandha (Hornbæk)

This workshop is in Danish, but may shift to English if needed. Focus is on establishing the bandhas as an integrated part of any yoga posture. The bandhas are essential in yoga posture practice, not only because they protect the joints and stabilize the core of the body. Practicing asana as bandha is an invitation cross the threshold from mere posturing and enter into the subtle depths of yoga. Rather than giving you knowledge about the physical, psychological and energetic effects of the bandhas this workshop will give you the tools to explore them in practice and experience firsthand their energetic and subtle effects. The aim of the workshop is to explore how the bandhas are not just about tension and stability but also about deep release and integration.

    to enquire more, write info@dynamicyoga.dk

  • 6-week course: Going Deeper (Level 2)

6-week course: Going Deeper (Level 2)

Going deeper in yoga is often perceived as a matter of strength, flexibility and stamina. However, these things are just cool side-effects of progressing in your practice. Acting on what you can feel rather than what you can do invites you to become one with what is happening on your mat without commentary and judgement. In this way yoga becomes  self-equiry (svadhaya) rather than yet another arena for self improvement. In this course we will play with posture practice as meditaitve movement even in more challenging yoga postures.

  • 6 week course: The teacher within (level 2)

6 week course: The teacher within (level 2)

Learn to practice yoga in a way that works for the body you have today.  Its very simple: Quiet softness means yes, sharp pain means no. This subtle inner compass of yoga speaks clearly to us in childhood but as we grow up it is easily drowned in the roaring river of external authorities and imposed ideas of performance. Consequently the body forgets its inborn integrity and becomes tense or hard. Ironically, an efficient and progressive yoga practice requires us feel rather than perform and respond rather than force the body.

Setting out with a sensitizing flow of yoga postures and returning in quiet meditation, Birgitte will guide you to respond effectively to what you can feel. This supports you in adjusting your posture practice from the wisdom of your own body rather than from memorized techniques or geometrical ideals. The course allows you to progress in your practice from week to week. As you gradually go deeper into the subtle heart of sensation you may hear the voice of the teacher within.

Each class is two hours long and with a maximum of 15 students, allowing you the time and space to learn how postures and techniques applies to the changing needs of your body.

The course will be taught in Danish but a few instructions can be given in English if required.

  • The Inner Vinyasa

Asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation are normally taught as separate techniques in yoga. In this workshop these three elements of yoga are introduced as an integrated whole, inviting you deeper into the subtle heart of yoga. Birgitte will teach a soft, simple vinyasa flow which invites you to go from yoga posture to meditation via the rhythm ofthe breath. The series lands in soft subtle movements that take you down into deep relaxation and awakens  you to seated meditation.

The workshop is open to all and taught in english if required
